How is the thickness of wires (Engl. Wire)?
The designation "g" for wires does not mean gram, as is often assumed, but is the abbreviation for gauge (AWG or BWG Wire Gauge).
Strictly speaking, the unit of measurement gauge indicates the tensile strength of the wire. Each pull makes the wire thinner, i.e. the more pulls, the smaller the diameter. Basically, the higher the number, the thinner the wire! The most common thicknesses used in sugar artistry are: 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28 and 30. Here 18 is the thickest wire, 30 the thinnest.
For comparison, gauge can also be converted to mm:
26 gauge = 0.405 mm
And then the wires are covered with a paper sheath.
